This is it...im sittin in my Web page II class writing off what is quite possibly the last DA journal i'll make in my high school career. Last day in on the 16th, also happens to be the first of the two-day Colorado State Track & Field meet...but i don't compete until Saturday. High jump and triple this year im afraid, Mayben beat me out in long jump by three inches. PR'd in all my events from last year:

Juinor: HJ-6'5'', LJ-21', TJ-I don't even kno
Senior: HJ-6'6'', LJ-21'8'', TJ-44'6.75''

Should be fun...i dunno, sad this is prolly the last team organized sport i'll do for quite some time post-high school. But you gotta take the bad with the good i suppose. As for college, I almost forgot to mention the results from the Scholastics Art & Writing Awards.

Peacekeeper received a silver key at regionals back in January i beleive, Albesia won me a $500 scholarship from CAEA to any in-state art related university of my choosing, while Alana and Ghosted City both won gold keys which meant they were shipped to New York for national judging. It wasn't untill a few weeks later that i found Ghosted City won a gold key at nationals in the individual catagory. Aside from portfolios, this is the highest award an individual piece can receive through Scholastics. 100,000 pieces were judged regionally while 10,000 of those works were sent off for national merits, and only 1,000 of those were awarded gold/silver keys at New York, placing my work in the top 1% of all high school students across the nation. The ceremony will be held at Carniege hall from the 4th through the 6th and me and my family with be staying in NYC for a lil over a week...which is great! Right??

Unfortunatly the Art Institute of CO (already applied and been accepted) doesn't honor this award...at all. Nor the $2K i got from College In Colorado, AND my work didn't quite make their own personal scholarship contest for $10K (but was put up for review to the head of my department for advanced placement...ppsshh) In short, i haven't had a great experience with the AI...but to be honest, they aren't my first choice either. It's just i can't exactly afford to live out of state right now, so even a sister school out in Cali is pretty much outta the question for now. Which brings me to my 2nd choice, RMCAD. My graphic design teacher has a connection with one of the admissions directors there and had great sucess in the past send her students their on generous talent-based scholarships. Now i'v already qualified for a $3K grant each year as long as i maintain my current GPA, PLUS they accept the College In Colorado monies...all this on top of a portfolio i haven't even SHOWED them yet for my application.

My question is this...while the AI offers a career placement program, as well as transfer credits to sister schools across the nation, their degree is heavily animation based (something i have very little interest in). RMCAD offeres degrees like computer illustraton, conceptual illustration, and character development, but is very fine-artsy and this could prove difficult when ransfering to an entertainment districts. My ultimate interest at present is conceptual art (digital/traditional or otherwise) to be used in entertainment heavy industries, vid-games movies etc. Unfortunatly my talent is far from where i'd like it to be and in my eyes (and what little research i'v done) not NEAR ready for employment in said fields. Understandible when your only 18 unless you just freakishly amazing. And i know who's of you are out there because you're the ones i study and learn from.

Anyway, perhaps im just rambeling because i never really got to a question/point...just wondering what your thoughts are because i'm getting nervous about not having done this months ago. Any advise/opinions would be most appreciated...

-see you on the other side

yo dude..u told me about ur accomplishments awhile ago (congratz again btw, you earned every spec of the awards u got), in my opinion though...although AI would be a great experience, i've heard mixed messages from various people at different Art Institutes(Chicago and Pittsburgh.) Art Institutes are very good, obviously, but again, they are very expensive. Me personally, i would lean for RMCAD in your case. i know what your interests are, and while very 'fine artsy', those are the skills that you'll need to know in ANY art related field. especially with your huge amount of potential, you would only grow even more from those experiences...and im 100% in that. but anyway just giving my light opinion. u know where to reach me to talk about it later. either way, goodluck at states, and enjoy ur last days of hs. ciao.

I totally agree.
I've been ripped off a couple of times with lame excuses like that.. >:c

Someone even went as far as stating that the art would be advertised at an Anime-thon in Mexico. r_r

Hope everyone takes the time to read it - it's good facts to be aware of.

very interesting find with the article. i wonder if those statistics are really true( i mean i already believe them to be true, i just wonder if the numbers are correct).

interesting to see you post this now as i find myself in a similar situation. I was asked by my coach to do some graphic design for him (which i hate btw) and get him a logo for a new organization that he's starting. he was always on me asking when id be finished, not realizing that something of even a few lines such as a graphic can take a long time to get right, forgetting that im doing this for him totally for free. so far hes pleased with what i gave him, but its interesting to see the post you just had, mainly #5. because both you and I get this type of request all the time.

people always asking to do this and do that for free. however its a delicate situation because they're both your friends and you want to help, but at the same time, our time is limited. people dont realize how long our craft takes.

anyway theres really no point to this rant. i just find it interesting that i find myself in the same situation as the article you just posted.

My last commission was a new ID badge for the UT, utah county constables office, and a new logo for their hats and pullovers. I never got a cent.

did u do the commission under the table? or was it actually a signed commission for money?

Nah. There was never any contract or shady dealing. My dad asked me to do it, because his boss was looking for a "professional", and he knew that I could produce the same or better quality for pocket change. It gets old having your family assume you'll do stuff for free, or when they say they'll pay you, and don't. (Grandma has an excuse because of my car and my new Sony!)

i completely agree...not but two days ago i helped someone out by drawing on (another) driveway, this time saying 'yes' to prom. granted it turned out like shit, but the way i was approached was almost sickening...somewhere along the lines of "Hey, can you draw on another driveway for me? Just in case all my ideas fail?" so i said sure...big mistake, because that very minute it appeard as though ALL his ideas failed and i became his number one customer (i don't wanna bitch because i ended up doing it anyway, and like i said it turned out like shit)

and just last week i had another girl ask me to do the tattoo design for her boyfriend. now, i must admit i prolly owe this person considering she helped me pass my chem-lab class last year, but again, it was the WAY i was asked (direct quote from my FB page mind you)

"Hey Dylan! Um I have kind of a weird question, but my boyfriend wants me to draw him a tattoo, but I am not so good at drawing, lol, so I was wondering if you could help me out sometime with it, since you are one of the best artists I know. Please? Please? lol, let me know."

so yes, i agree it's a delicate situation because [some] of the people who seek me out ARE friends of mine and i have no problem doing them a personal service. i just don't want something like this to be taken for granted and have just ANYONE thinkin' they can cop some free work 'just because'
